Hypnosis Brings Hope to Cancer Patients
It was while Wendy was sitting in the waiting room that she noticed it. She was waiting to be prepped for her next session of chemotherapy when it dawned on her: she felt calm. She gradually realized that she felt cool and in control. Over the last few days she had also noticed that she felt less nauseous and that she was sleeping better at night. It was as she sat in the waiting room that she felt grateful for what she had learned.
Wendy had read an article about cancer and hypnotherapy. Harvard University had just completed a major study on how hypnosis significantly improved recovery times in women under going surgery for breast cancer. A few days after discovering the Harvard study she learned about similar research conducted at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The study, which was reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, said:
“ women who receive a brief hypnosis intervention before breast cancer surgery spent less time in the operating room and reported significantly less pain and discomfort after surgery, less unpleasantness, nausea, fatigue, and discomfort.”
Wendy, who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, felt a wave of curiosity sweep through her when she read the article. She began to do research online about cancer and hypnotherapy. She learned a lot. Along the way, she discovered that medical hypnosis has been successfully used to treat a wide variety of conditions.
The use of hypnosis to treat the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation has been extensively studied in recent years. While modern oncology has made valiant strides in the successful treatment of cancer it often results in great discomfort for the patient. The list of side effects of chemotherapy is long and arduous. Many patients experience nausea and vomiting, pain and discomfort, hot flashes, dry mouth, hair loss, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. There are emotional side effects as well: anxiety, depression, and anger. Patients under going chemotherapy and radiation know all too well how grueling it can be.
In study after study, the powerful healing effects of hypnotherapy have been well established. In fact, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the nation’s leading research center in oncology, recently concluded an in-depth study of hypnosis and cancer. It’s conclusions were stunning. For cancer patients who received a single presurgery hypnosis treatment :
23% less lidocaine
35% less propofel
44% less unpleasantness
46% less fatigue
47% less discomfort
55% less pain
68% decrease in hot flashes
75% less nausea
85% increase in over-all quality of life
Sarasota doctor David Sewell AP, a specialist in Medical Hypnosis agrees:
“ Most people don’t realize just how much hypnosis can help you.
The research on the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for a variety of medical conditions is extensive. My patients see great results, especially my cancer patients. Because they face unique challenges, cancer patients really feel and recognize the benefits of hypnotherapy. It makes then more comfortable. They sleep better at night and their appetites improve. They see how it improves their lives and speeds their recovery. And best of all, the results are
sustained. It’s the most emotionally rewarding work I do.”
